Most scholars view the legacies of violence of an authoritarian past as uniformly negative for creating a new democracy. This paper maintains that the impact is not as linear as normally thought. Through consideration of political development in various democracies, the paper maintains that the impact of a violent extrication from authoritarianism needs to be assessed much more carefully than has hitherto been the case.
