194 The Media and Minorities in Europe

Sunday, March 16, 2014: 11:00 AM-12:45 PM
Blue Room (Omni Shoreham)
Minorities in Europe are represented in a variety of ways in the media. According to some scholars, this representation has been uniformly negative; according to others, it has been mixed. All agree, however, that media representations of minorities play a significant role in encouraging or discouraging minority integration in Europe. This panel brings together scholars from across disciplines, geographic locations, and methodological backgrounds to investigate how the European media portrays minorities. Participants cover larger theoretical overviews, cross-national comparative studies, and a case study of variations in coverage over time within a particular country. This panel aims to provide broad perspective on how the media portrays minorities in multiple settings, and to expose panel-goers to the variety of methodologies available for investigating these crucial issues.
