172 Feeling the Nation: Emotions, Morality and the German State-Making Project

Sunday, March 16, 2014: 9:00 AM-10:45 AM
Presidential Board Room (Omni Shoreham)
Recent work has highlighted the important role that emotions have played in state-making processes (Frevert, Rosenwein, Biess, van Rahden). In particular scholars have emphasised the importance of crafting moral frameworks and harnessing emotions as essential to the construction of nations and citizens.  This panel proposes to use these new methodologies as a lens to examine the various formations of the German state and Europe, from the early period of 19th century German nation building to the division of East and West Germany.
