184 Author Meets Critics Session. World Scouting: Educating for Global Citizenship (Book Panel)

Sunday, March 16, 2014: 11:00 AM-12:45 PM
Forum (Omni Shoreham)
The literature on transnational processes pivots around two joint processes: 1) the increase in movement across borders and 2) the emergence of political structures, identifications, and solidarities that transcend national borders.  Within the latter, research has focused mainly on international and supranational organizations (e.g. IGOs and NGOs) and on individuals (their experiences, identifications, and affinities).  Less attention has been paid to transnational meso-organizations representing key interests (eg. business and labor) and next to nothing to civil society ones.  World Scouting stands out for its in-depth examination of one of the world’s largest civil society organizations, the Scout movement.  The movement’s importance lies not only in numbers and geographic scope but also in the fact that by virtue of its members’ young age it has a unique capacity to impact on these members’ identifications.  The book musters primary and secondary sources to outline its historical development, objectives, and impact on the world outlook and identifications of its members.
