This paper investigates the contemporary representations of the Roma community across the 28 EU member states, using innovative data on national newspapers. We analyse the extent of the media coverage on Roma community (using three alternative terms for Roma including prerogative terms) and how the community is depicted by the media, focusing on negative and positive frames as well as thematic association. More specifically, we pay attention to associations with welfare policies, crime and cultural achievements. Our analysis provide first, an in-depth description of media coverage of the Roma community in a comparative fashion, and second, an analysis of national differences in the framing of this coverage. We study the impact of economic, demographic and institutional factors and investigate potential cleavages between Eastern and Western European Member-States.
