184 Comparative Persprectives on New Immigrant Destinations

Thursday, July 9, 2015: 2:00 PM-3:45 PM
S07 (13 rue de l'Université)
This panel is concerned with the major political and social challenges currently confronting the new immigration destinations in Europe. More specifically, its papers address the dilemmas posed by the proliferation of cultural, ethnic, and/or religious diversity evident in three types of new immigrant destinations: 1) “intermediate” destination countries (Ireland and Spain); 2) historical regions with a distinctive cultural, ethnic, and/or political identity (Emilia-Romagna and Veneto); and 3) “early migration cycle” countries (Poland), that is, destinations that appear to be transitioning from net emigration to net immigration countries. In bringing together scholarship on all these new destinations within a single panel we hope to make a contribution to identifying and comprehending the shared challenges of integrating immigrants in recently diverse settings.
