019 Queering Anti-Austerity: Gender, Sexuality, and Social Movements

Wednesday, July 8, 2015: 9:00 AM-10:45 AM
H202A (28 rue des Saints-Pères)
The recent European economic crisis and the implementation of austerity measures across the continent have sparked social movements and mobilizations in numerous countries. Social movement scholars have analyzed these mobilizations in depth, but they have often overlooked gender and sexuality in their analysis.

This panel is a comparative and interdisciplinary attempt to examine the various intersections between gender, sexuality and social movements in times of austerity. It looks at the involvement of feminists and queer activists in anti-austerity movements, at the consequences of anti-austerity policies on women’s and LGBTQ social movements and at sexual politics in a context of economic crisis and neoliberal offensive.

This panel gathers junior and senior social movement scholars from Europe and the United States and discusses case studies from Greece, Romania, Scotland, Spain and Turkey.

This is the first collaboration between research networks on social movements, and gender and sexuality.
