An emerging literature has begun to analyze the role of international organizations like the IMF, the ECB and the European Commission in the economic transformations suffered after 2008 by EU countries with balance of payment difficulties. However, while part of the same phenomenon, the economic crisis of Eastern Europe has had distinctive causes relative to that of Southern Europe. Moreover, while the ECB was involved in the "bailouts" of the latter, it was not involved in the former. Despite these differences, scholarship has not addressed the politics of these cross-regional differences. This panel aims to fill in this gap by bringing together scholars specializing in international conditionality during the crisis in the two regions. The case studies will cover monetary, financial, fiscal and structural policies in Romania, Hungary, the Baltic countries, Greece, Portugal and Ireland.
