090 The Distinctive Politics of TTIP Negotiations

Friday, April 15, 2016: 9:00 AM-10:45 AM
Assembly F (DoubleTree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City)
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations are highly ambitious, aiming to integrate closely the markets of two of the world’s three leading trade powers, which are already each other’s largest trade partners. These negotiations are taking place amidst a series of other trade and investment negotiations which have not caught the public’s interest. However, in spite of their highly technical nature, the TTIP negotiations have led to popular contestation and mobilization. What is distinctive in the politics of TTIP? To answer this question, the papers assembled in this panel focus on the bargaining power of both parties, new actors, and issues involved and reflect on the perils and promises of transatlantic negotiations.
