146 Living through Charlie Hebdo: Perspectives on the Events and their Legacies

Friday, April 15, 2016: 4:00 PM-5:45 PM
Symphony Ballroom (DoubleTree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City)
This panel brings together scholars of migration, minorities, and Muslims to talk about the events of January 2015 and their aftermath. Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing the dual perspective of scholars who were “witnesses to history” (because they were in France or in Europe on the days of the killings at Charlie Hebdo and the Hyper Cacher market) and who are analysts of broader societal or political forces that intersect with the dramatic events. How do we as researchers integrate our individual experiences with our professional roles? What effect does being close to events have on our work as scholars? What broader conclusions can we draw about French society and its relation to Islam and pluralism more than a year after the events?
