This paper examines the trajectory of populist ideologies in contemporary European politics and their connection to ideologies that rely on associative participation as a partial replacement of the structures of democratic representation. It focuses on the ethos of civil society involvement and on the idealization of deliberative and participatory democracy in recent European formations such as the Italian Five Star Movement and the Spanish Podemos.
