The Frustrating Search for a More Symmetric Euro Regime

The sustainability of the Monetary Union remains vulnerable to macroeconomic imbalances between Northern and Southern political economies. The present euro regime is designed to enforce structural convergence on the Northern model. Its impact is extremely asymmetric as the burdens of adjustment fall entirely on Southern member states. But the search for a more symmetric regime has not yet come up with economically and politically viable proposals.
