Life Satisfaction of Older People in Germany through the Vision of Household Determinants - a New Measurement of Quality of Life

This paper focuses on measuring the changes of life quality among German older cohort in a decade’s period (2007-2016) through the vision of household determinants. The main research question is how do household determinants impact on the life quality of German older people in last decade.

Life satisfaction, based on a plenty of quality of life researches, is develops into a new measurement of quality of life in this paper. Different with definitions in former researches, the term “life satisfaction” considered as a subjective self evaluation on satisfaction level of both individual’s objective living condition and subjective well-being. This research measures the changes on household determinants and the effects they bring to the life satisfaction of individuals, exhibits the relationship between changes on household determinants and life satisfaction of old cohort, which is different with most quality of life research, and then indicates the challenge for German older cohort in the future.

Correlations between quality of life indicators and the developed interpretation of life satisfaction constitute the theoretical framework of this paper. Data used in this paper comes from three terms European Quality of Life Survey which carried out in 2007, 2011 and 2016. Surveys provide massive samples for time series analysis and show how older cohort’s life satisfaction change in company with the changing of household determinants in Germany. Regression of household determinant in this paper shows the changes of each factor and explains how they impact on life satisfaction.
