Though the study of religion and politics has a long tradition in European Politics, it has not been explored at much length in recent decades, nor at much length within the historical institutionalism tradition.  This paper surveys extant contributions of historical institutionalism for the study of religion and European politics, assesses how the tradition explains the evolution and variation in religious affiliations and their impact on politics.  It concludes with proposals for future research.
