The European Union is a key player in shaping the regulation of a wide range of products, services, and markets.  The evolution of its regulatory profile has been an incremental process, occasionally punctuated by the adoption of major new treaties.  This paper assess the contributions of historical institutionalism for the study of regulation in the European Union and outlines areas for future research.
