New urban activisms have been gathering a growing protagonism in the last three years and have enhanced, jointly with other variables the appearance of mass civic movements such as 15M in 2011. In the paper we discuss wether this new activism is part of larger social movements or are a category by themselves.
Hi skilled young professionals and activists have managed to open new windows of opportunity for bottom up participation through non violent urban action, that has managed to transform and acitvate public spaces. The article considers the role of these movements in the governance networks and compares it with the one played by the traditional urban social movements. Strategies, motivations and aims are considered from a comparative point of view between both civic society realms.
