This panel explores the following key topics: Can European political integration be conceived without (nation) statist categories such as sovereignty and power and, at the same time, steer clear of the pitfalls of supranational federal democracy, such as the legitimacy of hierarchy? How is one to justify European Political Union, as a non- or post-democratic polity, in terms of a “complex democracy”, or a transnational “European demoi-cracy”? Which principles help accommodate mutually conflicting claims of authority? And which institutional innovations are required for securing “mutually embedded openness” in fields such as European Citizenship, Civil Society and the public sphere? Finally, how do reconfigurations of European democracy and economy resonate with subjective identifications with and meanings attributed by individuals to Europe?
