Domestic and Foreign Sources of Arab Absolutism: Evidence from Tunisia and Egypt, 1857-1882

This paper seeks to explain the sudden decline of "stateness" and political stability that followed the Arab uprisings in 2010-2011.  I focus on how foreign interventions by regional autocratic powers both obstructed democratization and contributed to internal war.
