Since its landslide victory in 2010 Fidesz has transformed Hungarian democracy and dismantled the liberal state. While outwardly conforming to democratic procedures, however, it is has violated democratic norms of consensus and fair play. This paper investigates the long-term determinants of Fidesz's consensus, and argues that by excessively pressing its supermajoritarian power, Fidesz is undermining the long-term viability and legitimacy of Hungarian democracy.
