034 The Limits of Free Speech in Europe

Thursday, April 14, 2016: 11:00 AM-12:45 PM
Orchestra Room (DoubleTree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City)
This panel brings together scholars working on freedom of speech, with a particular emphasis on issues of hate speech. These topics have been at the forefront of many European countries' public and political agendas in recent years, and are also pressing issues in a wide variety of liberal democracies. This panel unites anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists, and legal scholars who have studied freedom of speech in a variety of contexts. The goal is to promote a better understanding across disciplines and among country experts of free speech and hate speech, and to build on existing research in order potentially to frame a common research agenda.
