In my presentation I will discuss some of the themes laid out in my new book, In the Name of Women's Rights. The Rise of Femonationalism (Duke 2017). The book explores the ways in which feminist ideas are often exploited by anti-Islam and xenophobic campaigns. I have coined the term ‘femonationalism’ to describe the practice and claim that, by characterising Muslim men as oppressors and by emphasising the need to rescue Muslim women, these anti-Islam groups use gender equality to justify their prejudice.
