The term “extremism” has become increasingly controversial in recent years, causing some scholars to abandon the term altogether in favor of either broader language (i.e., the ‘far right’) or more specific language (i.e., ‘terrorism’).  Building on the cross-disciplinary and methodological conversations started in Panels 1 and 2, this panel brings together scholars from different disciplines who are working on theoretical aspects of extremism, as well as scholars presenting new empirical research that might contribute to how we define radicalism or extremism.  What is extremism?  What is radicalism?  How should they be defined?  Focused discussion by the panel moderator will help tease out whether there is any emerging agreement in these areas, or whether we will simply agree to disagree.
