041 New politics of diversity in Europe?: Perspectives from the margins of citizenship

Wednesday, March 28, 2018: 2:00 PM-3:45 PM
Toledo Room (InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile)
After the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ and the UK’s EU membership (BREXIT) referendum, Europe is facing new challenges in connection to diversity. In the recent years, Europe ( in the EU Member States as well as the candidate countries), has witnessed both the rise of populist radical right groups as well as the solidarity and “Wilkommenskultur” activism. Both of these actors identified that the effects of the new challenges are much broader and concern different populations, from citizens as well as other non-citizen residents of Europe. Yet the question still remains, how did these events affect both the politics of diversity and citizenship in Europe, and especially the position of marginalised minorities in Europe, such as Roma, Muslim Europeans, Migrants with precarious legal statuses, etc.? This panel addresses the transformations of the politics of diversity in different European constellations (Germany, France, Spain, Visegrad countries, post-Yugoslav region) and how it affects the marginalized (non-)citizens in Europe.
